For dinner last night we went to the oldest Peking Duck restaurant in Beijing. Apparently one of the Emperors got his first taste of Peking Duck there like 150 years ago and declared it a royal food or something like that.
The history was nice but the food was the story. Truly excellent. It was kind of weird that that everything, and I mean everything, was duck. We had 4 or 5 different types of small duck dishes for appetizers followed by a couple duck dishes that were essentially typical Chinese food but prepared with duck instead of chicken (duck with cashew nuts, General Tzo's Duck, Sesame Duck, Duck with Snow Peas). Then came the main course, a simply awesome serving of Peking Duck (shown above in the photos).
And then came dessert. It was a little puff pastry, a gelatin that looked like it might be chocolate, and a bowl of whiteish looking soup that we thought would be some sweet broth.
WRONG!
The pastry was duck pastry. The gelatin was duck duck pudding. The soup was duck stock.
Eeeew! It was not good. Duck works for most of the meal, but did not work as a dessert.
In truth, I don't think it was supposed to be dessert, but we assumed it was. Silly Americans!!
